hair removalEver wondered whether these hair 'facts' were really true? We've got the lowdown on the questions we're often asked about hair and hair removal!

Shaving or waxing causes more hair to grow back and makes re-growth coarser

False! It’s not true that more hair will grow back if you shave – shaving will not cause more hair follicles to be created. However, hair may appear coarser as the new hair that grows may have a more blunt shape to your original more tapered hair. But the hairs will eventually go back to how they previously looked.

Everyone can have laser hair removal treatments

False! Whether you’re suitable for treatment depends on your hair and skin colour. Very fair and red and grey hair can be more difficult to treat. Caci will not perform treatments if we do not believe you are a suitable candidate.

Hair becomes thicker when you’re pregnant

True! This can be true for some women. Your hair has three cycles of growth: growing, resting, and shedding. Because of the changes in your hormones while pregnant some women find that their hair stays in the growing phase longer so your hair appears thicker. After pregnancy this hair moves into the shedding phase and hair appears thinner or clumps come out at a time.

One laser hair removal treatment is enough

False! Most people need at least six treatments (others may need up to 14 treatments) to experience long-term hair loss. One treatment will not work as a laser hair removal treatment only targets those hairs that are currently in their active growth stage, so multiple treatments are necessary to get results.

All laser hair removal machines are equal

False! The machine that is used must be able to produce the correct energy level, pulse after pulse, after pulse.

Therefore it is important to have a machine that has been approved by the correct authorities, such as FDA (in the USA) and EU (for Europe). This will ensure that the energy levels do not fluctuate. New Zealand doesn’t have registration of laser or IPL machines. At Caci we use the Energist VPL machine and highly trained Senior Skin Care Therapists and Registered Nurses to perform treatments.
