Wondering if you should be changing up your skincare routine throughout the year? Linda Sharrem, Caci’s National Skincare Educator shares some of her tips on how to know when to adjust your routine and what are the changes she recommends.

Seasonal changes in skincare does not necessarily need to be an overnight change which can make it harder for your skin to adjust. We can do it gradually as the season approaches by adding in or reducing texture in skincare. You can focus on the elements of the season and your skincare should counteract the elements.

Summer

During the summer months, consider boosting your morning skincare routine with antioxidants like Vitamin C and Niacinamide. These powerful ingredients, also known as tyrosinase inhibitors, help protect your skin from environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution. Vitamin C brightens the complexion, reduces dark spots, and boosts collagen production, while Niacinamide works to even out skin tone, minimise pores, and strengthen the skin's barrier. Additionally, as the weather warms, it's ideal to switch to lighter skincare formulas. Omega fatty acids are great for nourishing and hydrating the skin without feeling too heavy. Opting for dry oils or lighter-weight oils, such as rosehip or jojoba, helps maintain moisture balance and keeps the skin smooth and non-greasy.

Autumn/Winter

As the cooler months arrive, it’s a great time to reintroduce hydrating serums into your morning routine. With lower humidity and cooler temperatures, your skin may need extra moisture to maintain a healthy, glowing complexion. Look for serums that boost hydration, like those containing hyaluronic acid, to help lock in moisture and keep your skin balanced.

Autumn and winter are also ideal for incorporating more potent ingredients like retinol into your skincare routine. As the sun’s intensity decreases, you can use retinols to encourage skin renewal, reduce fine lines, and improve texture. The cooler weather makes it a perfect time to focus on treatments that enhance skin tone and overall appearance without the worry of sun exposure.

    Spring

As spring arrives, consider transitioning your skincare routine to lighter formulations. You can start to reduce heavier creams and opt for hyaluronic acid-based products that provide hydration without the weight. Additionally, switch out oil-based boosters for water-based alternatives, which help refresh and revitalize the skin, perfect for the season's changing weather.

    All year round

No matter the season, always finish your skincare routine with an SPF during the day. This is a non-negotiable step for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays and environmental damage. SPF is your ride-or-die! Always, and I mean ALWAYS, finish your skincare routine with sunscreen during the day—no excuses! As your routine evolves, consider adjusting your sunscreen to a lightweight, mattifying formula with added antioxidants for enhanced protection and a smooth, shine-free finish.

Now that you have a better understanding of how to adjust your routine with the seasons, you’re well on your way to maintaining balanced, radiant skin year-round.
