The Science Behind Pigmentation

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun triggers skin cells to produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. When exposure is repeated over time, melanin builds up unevenly and forms dark spots, patches and uneven tone. UV also damages the skin's DNA and disrupts normal cell turnover, which means pigmented cells stick around on the surface for longer.

As we age, the skin becomes less efficient at shedding those pigmented cells, which is why pigmentation tends to get more noticeable over time rather than fading on its own. Hormonal changes like pregnancy or going on or off the pill can also trigger it, which is why it is more common than people expect.
