Treatment Benefits

Reduce Pigmentation & Sun Spots

IPL Pigmentation treatment targets the melanin in sun spots and age spots, breaking down pigment clusters and drawing them to the surface where they naturally flake away, leaving clearer, more even skin with each treatment.

Stimulates Collagen

Alongside fading pigmentation, the light energy stimulates collagen, improving skin texture while rejuvenating and plumping the skin. You’re treating pigmentation and supporting your skin’s long-term health at the same time.

Improve Skin Tone & Texture

Reduces uneven skin tone and sun damage for a clearer, more even complexion. Ideal for skin affected by years of UV exposure.

How Does IPL Pigmentation Treatment Work?

The pulsed light is attracted to the melanin and absorbs into it which then turns into heat.

This draws the pigment up to the surface and breaks it down into little particles. When that pigment reaches the surface, we call it the “miloing” effect—pigment goes darker and can look a little speckled. It can take up to 7 - 14 days for miloing to go away, then it will appear lighter underneath. Anything that remains under the skin's surface is removed by lymphatic drainage.

Approximately 4 weeks between treatments is recommended.

Pigmentation IPL Treatment FAQ's

Is IPL Pigmentation Suitable For Me?

It is suitable for those with pigmentary concerns. We can only treat skin on the Fitzpatrick scale of 1 - 3 (this system defines how much melanin is in one’s skin).

The IPL pigmentation treatment is not suitable during pregnancy.

During your consultation, our experts will assess your skin and identify if the treatment is right for you.

When Will I See Results After the IPL Pigmentation Treatment?

Many clients notice their lightening of sun spots and age spots after their first 1–2 IPL sessions. After the miloing effect resolves (7–14 days post-treatment) the treated areas appear lighter. Skin clarity continues to improve over a course of 4 or more IPL pigmentation treatments.

Is IPL Pigmentation Treatment Suitable For Melasma?

Melasma is a complex hormonal pigmentation and requires proper assessment before any treatment. Heat can sometimes worsen melasma, so IPL is not always appropriate. Your Caci therapist will assess your pigmentation type at a free consultation and advise the best approach for your skin.

Can I Treat The Pigmentation On My Hands And Chest?

Yes, IPL pigmentation treatment is highly effective on the face, décolletage, neck and hands — the areas most commonly affected by sun-induced pigmentation and age spots in New Zealand. Treatment time and pricing varies by area. Your therapist will advise at your free consultation.

Will Sun Spots And Pigmentation Come Back After The Treatment?

Treated sun spots and age spots are permanently broken down by IPL. However, new pigmentation can develop with ongoing sun exposure. Wearing SPF 50+ daily and having periodic maintenance IPL sessions is key to keeping your complexion clear and even long-term.

How Much Does IPL Pigmentation Treatment Cost At Caci?

IPL pigmentation treatment is $500 per session for non-members. Members on a Reformaskin membership will save on every treatment by signing up to a package of treatments, you'll enjoy each session for only $320.

Will My Sun Spots Look Darker After IPL Pigmentation Treatment?

The miloing effect is a completely expected response to IPL. The treatment targets your pigment and draws it to the surface where it temporarily darkens before naturally flaking away over 7–14 days. It is a sign the IPL pigmentation treatment is working! Do not pick at the spots as this risks scarring.

What Is The Post Treatment Advice After the IPL Pigmentation Treatment?

Your skin may be pink or even red post treatment. You may experience some flakiness. It may feel a little like mild sunburn or windburn. You can apply a cold compress if required.

It is possible for blistering to develop. If this happens do not burst the blister. You must contact your clinic for a review and further care instructions.

Over the next few days you may find dark patches appear on your skin that we refer to as the ‘milo’ effect. Do not pick or scratch these marks, as it may result in scarring. If they occur, they will last approximately 7 days.

  • Apply SPF50+ sunscreen daily. This is critical for the first 7 days.
  • Avoid rubbing the treatment area, exfoliating products or coarse facecloths until the skin has returned to its pre- treatment condition.
  • Avoid active skin products, such as those containing AHA’s (glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids), high doses of Vitamin C or A (Stieva A), for 48 hrs post treatment.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medication, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, (unless they have been prescribed by your doctor) for 3 days post treatment.
  • If you have sensitive skin, do not try any new products for 2-3 days post treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure, sunbeds or artificial tanning (including self tan) to the treatment area between treatments. This may prevent your next treatment, disrupt your treatment plan and may affect the outcome of your results.
  • Avoid exercise or activities that may cause excessive sweating for 24-48hrs post treatment.
  • If required we recommend using mineral makeup only.
