Men’s Skin 101: Is Men’s Skin Really Different?

The short answer? Yes.

While everyone's skin is different, there are some biological differences commonly seen between male and female skin that can influence everything from oil production and breakouts to facial hair and how the face changes with age.

The good news is you don't need a complicated routine or ten different products to look after it. Understanding your skin and what it actually needs is a much better place to start.

Is men's skin thicker?

Generally, yes. Male skin tends to be thicker and contains more collagen than female skin, largely influenced by hormones such as testosterone.

But having more collagen doesn’t mean men are immune to the skin concerns that come with ageing.

Collagen gradually reduces as we age, contributing to changes in skin firmness, texture, lines and wrinkles. Sun exposure can accelerate those changes too which makes daily SPF one of the simplest things you can do for your skin.

Why can men's skin be oilier?

Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands, which means men generally produce more sebum - the skin’s natural oil.

That can mean:

  • more visible pores
  • shine or oiliness
  • congestion and blackheads
  • breakouts
  • acne that continues well beyond the teenage years

The answer isn't to scrub or strip the oil away. Over-cleansing and harsh products can leave skin irritated without addressing what is actually causing the concern.

At Caci, we can assess what is happening in your skin and recommend a combination of skincare and treatments based on what it needs.

Then there's shaving

Regular shaving adds another variable.

Razor irritation, ingrown hairs, folliculitis, sensitivity and redness around the neck and beard area are common concerns for men.

Changing your shaving technique and skincare can help, but unwanted facial or body hair can also be treated with Laser Hair Removal where appropriate.

Laser Hair Removal can be particularly useful for men who regularly experience irritation or simply want less hair to manage including areas such as the neck, shoulders, back, chest and abdomen.

What skin concerns are common in men?

Some of the concerns we commonly see include:

Oiliness, congestion and enlarged pores

A personalised combination of cleansing, exfoliation, Hydradermabrasions, Peels and targeted skincare can help keep skin clearer and improve texture.

Acne and acne scarring

Active acne and the marks or scars it leaves behind are different concerns and may require different approaches. Once acne is appropriately managed, treatments such as Microneedling can help to improve the appearance of acne scarring and uneven texture.

Sun damage and pigmentation

Years spent outdoors can start to show as uneven tone, pigmentation, roughness and visible signs of sun damage. SPF is important at every age, while Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can target existing concerns.

Redness

Persistent redness, sensitivity and visible vessels can be influenced by a range of factors. Rather than trying random products, start with an assessment so we can understand what is happening in your skin.

Lines, wrinkles and changes in firmness

Collagen production naturally changes with age. Treatments including Microneedling, advanced laser treatments, skincare and cosmetic injectables can be used individually or together depending on your goals.

Men's faces change with age too

Ageing isn't just about wrinkles.

Overtime, changes happen at multiple levels of the face. Skin changes, collagen reduces, facial fat can shift or decrease, muscles change and even the underlying facial bones gradually remodel.

This can contribute to changes such as:

  • flatter or more hollow-looking cheeks
  • deeper folds
  • lines around the eyes and forehead
  • changes around the jawline
  • less definition through the lower face
  • a more tired apperance

That's why treating one wrinkle isn't always the answer.

At Caci, our approach can consider the face as a whole. Depending on what you want to achieve, that could involve skin treatments to improve skin quality, cosmetic injectables to address movement, hydration or volume, or a combination of approaches.

The goal isn't necessarily to look younger. For many men, it's simply about looking healthier, fresher or less tired - while still looking like themselves.

What treatments could be suitable?

There isn't one standard "men's treatment".

Depending on your skin and goals, your Caci Expert may recommend options such as:

Hydradermabrasion for exfoliation and hydration.

Microdermabrasion or peels to support smoother, clearer-looking skin.

LED Light Therapy to support overall skin health.

Microneedling to improve skin texture, acne scarring, pores and visible signs of ageing while stimulating collagen.

Fractional CO2 Laser for more advanced concerns including texture, lines, pigmentation and acne scarring.

Cosmetic injectables where the concern is related to lines, wrinkles, skin quality, hydration, volume or facial structure.

Laser Hair Removal for longer-term reduction of unwanted facial or body hair.

Skincare to protect your results and keep your skin working well between appointments.

You don't need to know which one you need before you come in. That's our job.

What about skincare?

If you're currently using whatever body wash happens to be in the shower, we can probably improve on that.

But your routine still doesn't need to be complicated.

A good starting point is:

1. Cleanse

Remove oil, sweat, SPF and daily build-up without stripping your skin.

2. Treat

Add one or two targeted products depending on your concern - whether that's breakouts, pigmentation, texture, hydration or visible signs of ageing.

3. Moisturise

Support your skin barrier and keep skin hydrated.

4. SPF

Every morning. Yes, even when it's cloudy.

Your Caci Expert can recommend products from Murad and Skinsmiths based on your skin rather than your gender.
